A stuck cam-chain tensioner could very well be the problem.
Seems you were a bit fast to give up on her, but, I think we all understand the feeling of panic striking when a bike "dies" and you suddenly are without transport. Good thing you will keep her, so we might get to know what's wrong...
If I were in your trousers I'd start to change the oil as soon as I get her home and check with a magnet for any signs of metal pieces in the oil, that could give you a valuable hint. In my humble opinion a price of 455$ to tell you what is wrong with the bike is TERRIBLE !!
I think any average mechanic who has seen a big single before can give you the most likely reason after less than two hours.
Anyway, how's the Harley ?
